Karaage Juourney
documentary / 30min
This is the story of Shokei, a man embarking on a mysterious journey across Japan during the COVID-19 pandemic—walking from one end of the country to the other while handing out free karaage (fried chicken) and spending his nights staying at the homes of complete strangers.
With nothing planned except for handing out karaage, I decided to join him on this enigmatic journey—only to find encounters with people grappling with various worries amid the pandemic. While Shokei easily connects with others through karaage, he himself was also struggling with questions about his own way of life. This is a record of Shokei’s one-month journey, as he continues to meet people and walk alongside them—even while feeling lost—all through the power of karaage.
